Los Angeles Page 2 continued
The raffle followed the entertainment. Some of our tablemates were runners
for the raffled event. Debbie and Amy and Helene brought the raffled items to
the winners. Ann R told us while she was in the Greek Isles, she had her Archer
doll posed for a picture when he suddenly toppled off the wall and landed with
an outstretched arm in a field of clover. When Ann bent down to pick the doll
up, its hand was wrapped around a 4 leaf variety. Ann plasticized the clover and
called it "Archer's Luck." At the luncheon, Ann passed it around and
when it got to me, I rubbed it on my arm for good luck. Three calls later, one
of my tickets won. I got a watch and a certificate for flowers from a CA shop.
After all was over, Chelsea's mom took our basket of Scott goodies to have
Scott autograph the items for us. Then we returned to the motel for an hour. A
group of us got together to got to the Magic Castle for dinner. This was an
unexpected and special treat because entry into the Castle is by invitation
only. Earlier in the weekend, Frannie, Helene and Barbara went to the Magic
Castle to get some external photos. Frannie was wearing her LOI shirt (Lord of
Illusions) and Barbara an LOI jacket. One of the magicians, John, came out to
talk to them and gave the group an invitation to come back. When we did, the
group included Helene, Barbara, Frannie, Jo, Linda, Amy, Debbie, Karen and
Ann.
The Castle has many rooms in it and shows are performed in rooms that range
from a handful of guests to a small theater. At our first show, our group sat in
the front row and the magician performed card and coin tricks. Then we moved on
to a 16 year old magician who won the gold cup of magic with a trick using
batteries. Each trick, the batteries got larger and larger until it was one car
sized battery. One of his tricks was with dental floss which he cut into several
pieces and had me roll into a ball for him. He then proceeded to stretch the
ball into one long piece of floss again. He did a similar trick with rope and
gave me one of the cut pieces to keep as a souvenir.
Dinner was in the Victorian room. I had prime rib and asked for horseradish.
I think it was fresh, not bottled, because it was the hottest horseradish I'd
ever tasted.
After dinner we saw the main show which was hosted by a Brit with a wicked
sense of humor. There was a magician who never spoke a word. He used birds for
his act and was wonderful. Then there was a magician couple who did a sword
through the box trick. The Brit came back on, brought a gentleman from the
audience up on stage, and did a strait jacket shtick that had us laughing so
hard we were almost in tears, especially when he had the gentleman from the
audience secure the leather piece that went between his legs and buckled in the
back.
After the show, I was worn out and ready to call it quits but first we took
one final detour to the WC Fields room and passed an Edgar Bergen dummy on the
way as well as what looked like an original Jerry Mahoney dummy. We also peeked
into the séance room that was used for dinner in an LOI scene. Bed was about
2:30 that evening.
